A man who was found guilty of raping a pros구리안마titute in a toilet stall died at the scene because he was on drugs, coroner has said.
James Murray was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting 23-year-old Maria Bell at a flat in Westport in June 2016. The 26-year-old, who had moved into the flat a few months earlier and had started a relationship with Murray, did not die from the sex attacks.
Murray’s trial heard her body was found by a passer-by and was taken to hospital for an autopsy.
His defence claimed her death was because of drugs.
Mrs Be룰렛ll, from Londonderry, was the only victim.
In a dramatic, gruelling, three-week trial at Belfast Coroners Court, the pathologist Prof Andrew Murphy QC told jurors that it is “not possible to find out exactly what was going on” and the “real cause of death is unknown”.
After the verdict, an emotional Murray hugged his friend, brother and former partner, John Campbell.
“We never expected to die in court,” his brother John told the court.
At a packed public gallery, he added: “I don’t understand the pain anyone feels. I don’t know the feeling of seeing your loved one go and see them cry, I don’t know that I am doing the right thing, and it’s a decision I’m taking in my own head as well.”
The case drew a storm of protest from supporters of Mrs Bell and Murray and was the focus of several protests.
